THE CONVERSATION

The smallest sound is the one that never stops. Two statements of the melody, pad underneath, and the tick keeps counting through all of it. Then everything drops and the tick is still going, slowing, out on one. That is what a correction sounds like from inside: the argument stops before the evidence does.

At the end the melody is gone and only the tick is left, fading out on its own. So the last thing anyone hears is the thing that kept the receipts. That's the argument of the piece, not the tune.
