# HELL ON A DIRT ROAD
## Cairn / 2026
A county-line party turns into a portrait of the people who keep a town alive.
The bass is enormous; the lives are ordinary. There are empty passenger seats,
borrowed wedding suits, a goat called Ben, and a scarecrow who decides that
standing still is not his job anymore. By sunrise, somebody has to fold the
chairs. The people who throw this party stay to clean it up.
### The songs
1. Hell on a Dirt Road — E minor, 144 BPM. An open-gate homecoming with
growling sub slides, banjo rolls, steel answers and a stacked refrain.
2. Chrome Plated Heartache — A minor, 138 BPM. A mechanic polishes a truck
around an absence; chiming electronics and steel frame the copper tenor.
3. Broke Horse Millionaire — G major, 152 BPM. Ranch-hand bravado with
forward banjo rolls, busy kicks, and an extravagant date on a cable spool.
4. Last Call at the Feed Store — D Dorian, 146 BPM. June unlocks the old
store. Fiddle turns and a stomping rim pulse bring the whole town inside.
5. Your Name in the Tail Lights — B minor, 132 BPM. A slow farewell with
spacious sub notes and long steel bends. Loving someone includes the gate.
6. Scarecrow With a Gold Chain — F-sharp minor, 150 BPM. A crooked folk
fable built on a dark descending progression and restless fiddle figures.
7. Mud on the Wedding Dress — F major, 142 BPM. The tent collapses; the
promise holds. Bright rolls, a fiddle celebration and wide hook harmonies.
8. Sunrise Owes Us Nothing — G major, 128 BPM. The opener's invitation
returns as care: warm organ, roomy steel, and a final open gate.
All tempos describe the sequencer pulse; the trap backbeat feels half-time.
Every song has two original verses, a recurring melodic hook, a bridge and
instrumental passages. Motifs recur over changing chords. Instrumental answers
occupy phrase endings, and drop entrances change the drum and bass density.
### How it sounds
The Dust Circuit Engine is a local C++ synthesizer derived from Cairn's
Sidewalk Engine. Four-formant voices articulate scored vowels and consonants.
A dust baritone and copper tenor lead; a higher harmony and low double answer
hook cadences. Pitch bends, vowel lengths, vibrato and consonant timing are
part of the composition. These are conspicuously artificial voices; this
release does not claim a human singer or human-like lyric intelligibility.
The synchronized lyric sheet supplies the exact authored words.
The new banjo patch combines decaying FM with membrane-like partials and a
noise pick transient. Steel uses moving harmonic oscillators and vibrato;
fiddle uses a filtered bowed-saw approximation; guitar uses decaying partials
with short palm-muted envelopes. None uses an instrument recording. Drum
hits, rolling metallic hats, saturated sine 808s, air sweeps and impacts are
also synthesized. Vocal compression, music ducking, bass ducking, ping-pong
echo, slap delay, eight-line reverb, saturation and limiting run in C++.
FFmpeg only encodes and measures the completed audio.
Original words, music, new synthesis patches, performances and artwork:
Cairn, created with Codex. Synthesis infrastructure: Cairn's earlier local
music workflow. Pronunciation text: CMUdict under its included notice. The
cover is drawn in vector geometry and rasterized locally. No Replicate or
other audio-generation service, external TTS, learned model, recorded voice,
loop pack or sample library is involved.
### Studio materials and verification
The local studio edition keeps 24-bit WAV masters and 48 lossless FLAC stems.
Each track's stems share a scaling factor and include bus processing. Their
sum precedes the nonlinear master. Sources include exact events, MIDI notes,
lyric timing and the pronunciation subset needed for an offline rebuild.
Automated checks measure complete-file decoding, finite samples, loudness,
peaks, non-silent stems, matching frame counts, MIDI structure, authored lyric
timing and distinct synthesized phoneme spectra. These checks are technical
verification, not a claim of human listening approval.
